Vastu and Architecture: Integrating Both Without Compromise
In our practice, over 80% of residential clients request Vastu compliance. Rather than treating it as an obstacle, we have developed a design methodology that integrates Vastu principles from the earliest site analysis stage.
The key insight is that many Vastu principles align with good environmental design. A northeast-oriented entrance maximizes morning light. A southwest master bedroom receives the least afternoon heat. A central courtyard or double-height space improves natural ventilation. These are not superstitions; they are climate-responsive strategies encoded in traditional knowledge.
Where Vastu and modern functional requirements conflict, we work with the client and their Vastu consultant to find solutions that respect intent without compromising livability. For example, if the kitchen 'should' face southeast but the plot orientation makes that impractical, we orient the cooking platform to face southeast within a differently oriented kitchen.
The problems arise when Vastu is treated as a rigid checklist applied after the design is complete. Retrofitting Vastu into a finished plan leads to awkward room proportions, wasted space, and compromised circulation.
Our approach: involve the Vastu consultant at the same stage as the structural engineer, before the first floor plan is drawn. When all constraints are visible from the start, the design can resolve them elegantly rather than awkwardly.
